Students practiced rolling to aim at a target when we bowled in PE this week. We also did some name that tune and dancing while waiting for our turn!
Students in all grades are learning about how to be mindful. Mindfulness occurs when we pay attention to what is happening in the here and now. We observe our emotions, our thoughts, our surroundings, in an even-minded, nonjudgmental way. Students have learned a variety of ways to be mindful and a variety of techniques which will be helpful in calming uncomfortable thoughts and feelings. Taking deep breaths, using a glitter jar, giving yourself a hug, or thinking happy thoughts are some of the useful ways that students have learned to cope.
In PE, students have been working on using scooters safely. First and second graders got to play the gym version of Hungry, Hungry, Hippos while Kindergarten played scooter scramble!
Students got a chance to visit fall stations in PE this week. There were 5 stations that were enjoyed by all....bat cave, basketball, catwalk, skeleton puzzle, and pumpkin patch.
Firefighters Croall and Kline once again did a wonderful job helping our youngest students learn about fire safety! All of the students even got to sit on the fire truck!
The fire department came in to teach all four grades about fire safety. In first grade they learned to crawl low under smoke. In second grade, students went home to do a fire safety checklist with their families. In third grade, the students learned about the fire triangle (or the science behind fire) and also what to do and not do if there is a kitchen fire. And in fourth grade, the students learned about a variety of fire safety hazards in the kitchen as well as poisonous materials that may be found in the home.
We had a sit-up relay as part of our fitness unit today. While doing the sit up relay, we earned plastic cups. At the end we were challenged to build the tallest castle with the cups.
December can be both exciting and stressful, even for children. We spent last week using yoga to connect our minds and bodies and to feel more calm and relaxed.
